W e would again invite the reader to look on the essay written by Mircea Remus cav.Birtz.OBSS, Old Things from the Past for the Future, even if the story finishes there in 1995.

Here are some portraits, from that time, of Dimitrij Vth (Lje Dimitrij I) and his wife, Marina Mniszek:

Some sources of that study are offered here:

1.Peter Truhart, Regents of Nations,   Munich, 1986, Saur Vlg, about Dimitrij VI Dimitrievich

2.OBSS 1669 1788    about the Berat Nishan of the Sultan Mohamed the IVth and Ercole (Hercules) III rd Duke of Modena. Several studies about OBSS and di Demetrio family were mentioning the Ïradeh of the Sultan, which is an anachronism. Iradeh decrees were issued only in the Enlightenment period of the Turkish/Ottoman Empire, starting with the XIX cent.!

3.Vittorio Spreti „Comneno”    a fragment from the article of Vittorio Spreti, written in 1944, about Comnene Dynasty, mentioning the Beys of Enos/Enez

4.Benvenuto Emilio Riurik 1951   a booklet issued in 1951, trying to decipher the history of di Demetrio family. the copy we used was provided with the autograph of Dr. Demetrio Maria di Demetrio Morosini, alias Dimitrij IX Vasiljevich of Russia. However, genealogies traced  to Octavianus Augustus and Prus are legendary. In best sense, they can be interpreted in a symbolic way.

5.Dimitrij IX Vasiljevich in Bari    a small booklet which presents the text of a conference hold by the late Duke  Dimitrij Vasiljevich, who was also a physician and lawyer, about the refugees medical care in Bari. The father of Dimitrij X Dimitrievich was also involved in keeping the City of Triest as Italian. After 1945, Istria, Pola, the Italian Dalmatia were occupied by Yugoslav forces, and, like Fiume, Triest could be lost. The Peace Conferrence from 1947 stated that Triest must be a free city, ist backround belonging to Yugoslavia. In 1955-1956 the Italian rights were however fully recognised upon Trieste/Triest, and this due to Italian patriots. Dimitrie IX Vasilievici (Dr. Demetrio di Demetrio) in Triest    clicking here two historical articles where he is expressly mentioned can be read. Dimitrij IX Vasiljevich was a true Italian patriot. His wife, Pia Pronio (+1989) published a literary book too, three sketches in naturalistic style : Pia Pronio Nel Turbine 1928

6.Demetrio IX Vasilijevich 1954   presents some pages from „L ‘Annuario degli Insigniti Cavallereschi„, from 1954, cured by the Society of the Italian Knights, under the protection of H.M. King Umberto IInd.

7.Antonio Accogli di Predeslava La casa Granducale di Mosca

Attilio Valente di Valbruna La Casa di Mosca 1955 , p. 32-38

(please rotate them when using Adobe PDF Reader). Here the booklet of Antonio Accogli di Predeslava about di Demetrio family is given. We have to observe that others authors, writing on the same topic, used more or less the text of  di Predeslava ( Ciro Argondizza, Luciano Pellicioni di Poli,  Caramelli di Clavesana, etc.). The Fragment of Valente di Valbruna book is having the same text, less the end, therefore the end is published here.

If Dimitrij IX Vasiljevich was helped by Prof. Silvio Ciotti with the Rules of the Academy of St. Cyrill (see the post about Dimitrij’s  Academic Circles),  when trying to organize his heraldic patrimony, he was helped by the reputed Italian heraldist, Dr. Carmelo Arnone. We will present the Rules of the several Knightly Orders of di Demetrio family, as redacted by Dr. Carmelo Arnone. Note always his observation „when  redacting these Rules, I do not do any historical comments”.

a)Carmelo Arnone Ordine della Fede (S.Demetrio) 1943

b)Carmelo Arnone Ordine di S. Giorgio (Moscovita) 1943

c)Carmelo Arnone Ordine di S. Cirillo 1943

d)Carmelo Arnone Ordine dell’Imperial Soglio Russo 1943

e)Carmelo Arnone Ordine di S. Basilio (fragm) 1943    it is published only a fragment, the paragraphs of the Rule being common with those of St.Cyrill.

f)Carmelo Arnone Ordine del Santo Sepolcro 1943  this being the genuine Order belonging to di Demetrio family, due to the Polish connection of its forefathers. In Poland the Equestrian Order of H. Sepulchre was never united with the Order of St.John (Malta), as in other countries.

After the death of  HIH Dimitrij IX Vasiljevich of Russia (1965), his son, Dimitrij X Dimitrievich started the reform of some of these Orders, together with the Academy of St. Cyrill. We publish here some materials about.

Ordine dell’Imperial Soglio Russo 1967

Ordine di S. Giorgio (Moscovita) 1967

were the firsts to be reformed.  The same about Ordine San Cirillo 1967.  But because Dimitrij wanted to occupy himself with philosophy, logic, mathematics and literature, he was not attentive at some of his partners. If  Bishop Tito Mancini (+1969) was an honourable figure, Rev. Bruno Rigon had troubles with the Italian police and justice due to the titles traffic.

The Byzantine Order of the Holy Sepulchre was  reformed also (in 1965), Dimitrij delegating the Great Mastership to Rev. Joannes Maria van Assendelft (1923-2004), in those moments very active in real or bogus chivalric orders, and in the small Churches from Gallican or Old Catholic background. Assendelft was not leading this order properly, so Dimitrij had to dismiss him. All the documents can be found here:

Antonio Accogli di Predeslava Ordine del Santo Sepolcro (Russo) Atti 1970

S. Exc. Msgr. Jean Marie van Assendelft

Bishop van Assendelft joined in 1972 (according to some sources) the Coptic Orthodox Church (lead by Pope Shenouda III from Alexandria), being a very regular Coptic bishop, and, according to official Coptic magazines, having done a good work in God’s vineyard. A record of Bp. van Assendelft can be found here:

36-11-07-Voix de Saint Marc, p. 10-11

However, knights created by Msgr. Assendelft  were planning his dismissal, and created a new order, transforming the Milicia of the Holy Sepulchre  (a new name given to the Byzantine Order by Assendelft) in the Byzantine Order of the Holy Sepulchre. A  new Rule was published in Malta, in 1976

A strange OBSS from Malta 1976

The reader will agree that the presence of  the Templar Knights in Medieval Russia is a phantasy, unfortunately like other historical references there.

Mr. Alfred Joseph Baldacchino, a former Maltese diplomat and MP, tried to regularize this Maltese OBSS, and, discovering that HIH Dimitrij was still living, established contacts with him. Dimitrij  had some obvious pretensions, expecting  respect due to his state, and Mr. Baldacchino  was trying to increase  the number of knights, not always being attentive to the necessary requests.

Baldacchino was nominated as Delegate Master (1986) and in 1989 adopted, Dimitrij having no children.

Baldacchino Deputy Master 5 XII 1986

Baldacchino Adopted 12 X 1989

HIH the Great Duke Dimitrij  was not content with this new situation,  he  never received the due reports, nor was invited at the ceremonies, etc. So he created a new Rule, for a branch of OBSS submitted directly to him.

Dimitri OBSS 1989

More, he cancelled the documents addressed to mr. Baldacchino, dismissing him, the split in the OBSS being now a reality. Dimitrij’s historical account of  this evolution was published in Atti dell’Imperiale Accademia di Mosca I-IV, which can be read here:

Atti Imperiale Acc. di Mosca I II III IV

(please rotate this file, after opening it with Adobe Reader, clicking View on the file toolbar, and then clockwards). More press releases were printed too. Here are some annexed papers Annex Ac Mosca 1-4

Press communiques were published in Italian journals :Press extracts OBSS 1994.

In 2000 HIH Dimitrij X Dimitrievich of Russia, being ill and alone, tried to reconcile himself again with Mr. Baldacchino, and adopted Mr. Massimo Silvestri, baron of Olbia, from Venice, as Massimo di Russia. Mr. Baldacchino claimed that the act of 2000 was a transfer of  sovereign powers (which in fact is not possible), the act from 2000 being a private one (no notarised seal on it, nor the Seal of di Demetrio family). The act is presented here Dimitrij Baldacchino 6 VIII 2000

But Mr. Silvestri was adopted legally, and received a notarised testament according to the Italian Law,  so he in fact is the legal heir of the late Great Duke.
